San Diego County Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CALA) is a 501 (c) 6 non-profit, non-partisan, grassroots organization dedicated to reform of our civil justice system. Formed in 1994 and now with more than 3,000 supporters, CALA's mission is to educate the public about the impact of lawsuit abuse on consumers and California's economy, thereby fostering a climate for change that begins at the local level. Our goal is to bring balance, fairness, responsibility and restraint to our legal system through public awareness and grassroots support.
We believe that
civil justice reform has not been adequately addressed by
our lawmakers due to the influence of special interest
groups on the legislative process. We feel the public
must become engaged in the debate over legal reform
before California can solve its lawsuit crisis.
Our message is simple -- the California court system is out of control. It both invites and rewards abuse. Lawsuit abuse threatens the very balance the court system was designed to achieve and prevents legitimate victims from being fairly compensated in a timely manner. When people abuse the system, we all pay and we all lose. As such, we have a personal responsibility to fix the problem; to prevent the abuse while protecting one's access to the courts. CALA's desire is to see justice restored where both parties get even handed treatment, no more no less.
